Ashland Oregon’s Northwest Pizza & Pasta: How Restaurants Can Support the Local Community

As we get ready to leave Ashland at the end of this week, I’m now in the “man I’m going to miss _____” mode.

Ashland is a cool town and we are definitely going to miss many aspects of it. But last night, I was reminded of one of the businesses that I will miss the most: Northwest Pizza & Pasta.

I don’t know anything about running a local pizza shop in a small town like Ashland, but here’s what I know about Northwest Pizza:

  • They make great food.
  • They support other local businesses, non-profits, student groups, schools, churches and more.
  • Their owners are amazing people.
  • They are constantly looking for ways to make a difference in the community.

I don’t know much about the history of Northwest Pizza, but people have told me that before it was taken under new ownership, it wasn’t that great of a place. The decor and furnishings inside were nothing special, and people didn’t seem to have great memories of it. But it was taken under new ownership in the past couple years and they totally redid the inside. But more than that, I think they brought a new ethos to the restaurant and a new idea of being a business in the community.

I first approached the owners about hosting Theology Pub over a year ago. Without even giving it a second thought, they were eager to host our group, and did whatever they could to make our Theology Pub gatherings at Northwest Pizza easy for us and they’d even join in on the conversations from time to time. The Ashland Youth Collective did a few fundraisers at Northwest Pizza, and had a car wash in their parking lot.

I got to know some of the owners pretty well, became Facebook friends, and saw more of the ways they try to connect with the community and make Ashland a better place through their business. I got home from a youth group fundraiser we did at Northwest Pizza a month or two ago, and was texting with one of the owners, thanking them. Their reply was awesome; they said they just wanted their business to be able to give back to Ashland and make a difference in people’s lives. Can you imagine if more businesses embraced that type of a business model?

If you check out their Facebook page here, you can see a constant stream of the food specials they’re offering, events like concerts, open-mic & slam-poetry nights and much, much more. They are always hosting fundraisers for local groups, churches, schools, and other organizations that work with kids in Ashland. Or if you checked it out yesterday, you might have seen this post about my going away party last night:

Sarah, Caleb and I showed up last night to a huge section reserved for us, with a chalkboard message (in the photo above) written by one of the owners. I didn’t ask for anything special, but that’s just the type of people that they are.

If you’re looking for good pizza and more in Ashland, Northwest Pizza & Pasta is your place. But more than that, if you’re looking for a local business in a small community that is rocking the use of social media, that supports their community in some amazing and profound ways, and truly seeks to become a business that gives back and changes people’s lives…you should talk to the folks at Northwest Pizza!
